80年代の歌姫メリッサ・モーガンが19年ぶりに来日—いままで明かされなかったストーリーが明らかに

I got to Sing on WHITNEY HOUSTON’S first Album because of our good friend and one of her Producer’s KASHIF. I worked with KASHIF a lot on his recordings and I toured with him. When he was producing WHITNEY on her first Album, he called me in to sing background on the song “THINKING ABOUT YOU”. I met WHITNEY and we hit it off right away. We sang the song and it made the Album. I loved her spirit and her incredible voice from The that time on. Very Proud to have been a part of the Album and I miss her as a friend.

MELBA MOORE was co-founder of Hush Productions, my Management team and Production company that I signed with when I recorded “DO ME BABY” for Capitol Records. I have sang with her and toured with her. I call her Auntie Melba. An incredible person and singer. We will be working together again soon, I believe later on this year in The U.K.

——In 1986 you got more attention by covering Prince’s “Do Me, Baby” in solo. Why did you cover Prince’s “Do Me, Baby”?（1986年には、ソロでシンガー/ソングライター/音楽プロデューサーのプリンスの「Do Me, Baby」（ドゥー・ミー・ベイビー）をカヴァーしてさらに注目を集めましたが、なぜ「Do Me, Baby」（ドゥー・ミー・ベイビー）をカヴァーすることになったのでしょうか？）

私には選択の余地はありませんでした。Capitol Records（キャピトル・レコード）と契約したとき、当時の社長であるDon Grierson（ドン・グリーソン）が、「Do Me Baby」（ドゥー・ミー・ベイビー）を2年間保留にしていて時間がなくなっていたので、「次世代のR&Bシンガー（ザ・ネクスト・R&Bシンガー）がこの曲をレコーディングしなければならない」と言いました。それが、私でした。私の選択ではありませんでした。当時、私はまだ19歳か20歳で、「Do Me Baby」（ドゥー・ミー・ベイビー）を歌いたくなかったのですが、やれと言ったのは、父でした・・・「もし彼らが、その曲をお前に歌わせたいのならば、お前は歌うことができる。前進し、それをやりきりなさい。彼らは業界についてよく知っているし、スーパースターの作り方も知っている」と。だから、私はやりきると、ワオ！誰もが正しかったのです・・・私の声とキャリアにとって、まさに完璧な歌でした。

I really had no choice. When Capitol Records signed me, the President Don Grierson had that song on hold for two year and time was running out, he said the The Next R&B singer I sign Has to do Record this song. That was Me! It was truly not my pick and I almost did not do it. I was like 19 or 20 at the time. I did not want to sing about that. It was my Father who said… if that is what they want you to sing, and you can sing it. Go ahead and do it. They knew best and they knew how to make Superstars. So, I did it and WOW! Everyone was right… it was the perfect song for my voice and my Career.

——I was born in 1983, so that I was like growing up with your career! Actually, my birthday is February 15th, and it is a strange coincidence that “Do Me Baby”, recorded No.1 for three weeks from February 15, 1986.（私は1983年生まれなのですが、メリッサのキャリアと一緒に育っているようなものですね。私の誕生日が2月15日なのですが、「Do Me Baby」（ドゥー・ミー・ベイビー）が1986年2月15日から3週連続でNo.1を記録したというのも縁を感じました。）

なんと、奇遇ですね。「DO ME BABY」（ドゥー・ミー・ベイビー）が3週連続で1位を獲得したことは、私にとって素晴らしい瞬間でした。当時、音楽業界で評価されることが、どれほど記念すべきことなのか私自身はわかっていませんでした。もっと仕事やツアーをしたり、レコーディングをしたり、曲を書いたりしたいとばかり思い、忙しくしていて、そのような大きな祝福に感謝することに時間をかけませんでした。いま、私はとても感謝しています。「DO ME BABY」（ドゥー・ミー・ベイビー）は傑作で、今日も演奏されています。

Wow… That is a coincidence. It was a great time for me having “DO ME BABY” be #1 for Three Weeks. At the time I did not know how monumental that was with introducing me to The Real Music Business. I was so busy wanting to work and Tour and do more recording and write songs. That I did not take the time to be Thankful for such a huge Blessing in my life. I am very Thankful now. “ DO ME BABY” Is such a Classic and it is still played today.

——Why did you take a break away from music (business) for awhile?（なぜ、しばらくの間、音楽（ビジネス）から離れたのですか？）

いままで本当に休んだことがありませんでした。それまでいくつかのアルバム/CDを作りました。キャピトル・レコードや音楽業界が、ヒップホップやラップに移り変わっていった後、私はレーベルを変えます。業界は、私の進む方向とは別の方向に進んでいたので、私はツアーと作業だけをすることにしました。日本にも2回来ましたし、ヨーロッパとアメリカでもツアーをしました。私は別のレーベルでレコーディングし、Freddie Jackson（フレディ・ジャクソン）、Kem（ケム）、Joe（ジョー）、そして、他の多くの人たちとツアーをしながら自分の道に戻ることができました。その間もいつも働いていたのです。シングルをレコーディングし、ゲストとして他のアーティストのCDのレコーディングにも参加しました。私は本当に休んだことがなかったので、音楽ビジネス以外の人生も楽しむことにしました。それは私にとって重要でした。最初の自宅を持つことができましたし、サウスカロライナ州にある私の家族の家でいまは私の別荘になっている家を改装しました。私は人生を楽しんで生きて、幸せであることを楽しみました。それは私のキャリアについてだけではありません。一人の人として幸せになることだったのです。

I really never rested. I did several Albums/CD’s. I switch labels after Capitol and the music industry was changing so with Hip Hop and Rap and music. It was going in a different direction. So, I decided to just Tour and work. I came to Japan twice during that time. I toured Europe and The United States. I recorded with another Label and I went back on the road touring with Freddie Jackson, Kem, Joe and many others, I always worked. I recorded singles and recorded on other Artists CD’s as a special featured Guest. So I really never rested. I enjoyed my life outside of The Music Business, Too. That was important to me. I brought my first home. I renovated my family home which is now my other house in South Carolina. I have enjoyed my life and enjoyed living and being happy. It is not always about just my Career. It is about being happy as a person.
